How to Make Collage Themes

The collage is a simple form of art that allows the artist to use creativity and various materials to express a theme. Alter the theme by manipulating color, patterns, material type, texture, design and placement on the background.

Instructions

1. Choose the theme for your collage. Consider shapes, trees, flowers, sport events, a specific era, memorabilia, holidays, hobbies or other subjects that appeal to you.

2. Collect materials, such as colorful paper or tissue, computer pictures, magazine articles and pictures, essays, poems, tickets, greeting or note cards, fabric, yarn, photographs and other flat materials to make your collage themes.

3. Cut the materials to fit the theme. The shape theme requires rectangular strips cut from colored paper, newsprint or other materials with a design or color.

4. Organize your materials to place on the background paper. Continue the shape theme by arranging and gluing the rectangular strips, with the edges touching, to a piece of paper.

5. Cut any flat material to fit your theme. To make shape theme collages, draw and cut many different sizes of the shape on top of the rectangular glued strips that have dried thoroughly.

6. Select the background paper to make collage themes. Use plain, designed or colored paper in a thickness that suits your project.

7. Glue the materials you have made or chosen on the background paper in a pattern that follows your theme. Edges of the materials should blend one into the other.

Tips & Warnings

• Make shapes and fancy edges on your materials with pinking sheers.

• Allow materials to overlap the background paper's edges and cut them to align with the paper.
