Making sock puppets is a great homestyle craft to do with children. Many kids feel a sense of accomplishment when they make something with their own hands. Learn how to sew the arms and tail on your own sock monkey puppet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut a sock crosswise at the top of the heel. Essentially, cut the "tube" part off a tube sock. Cut straight across so that the arms are the same length.

  2. Step 2

Use scissors to cut the resulting tube to make a flat piece of sock fabric. Measure the fabric to make sure your next cut is exactly down the middle. Cut the piece of sock fabric in half again. You should now have two long pieces of fabric you can sew into tubes for the arms.

  3. Step 3

Turn each of the long pieces of fabric (the arms) inside out and pin them. Start sewing in one corner of the tube and curve your stitch around to make a "hand" shape. Sew all the way up the tube and leave one end open so you can stuff the arm and attach it to the body.

  4. Step 4

Make each stitch about 1/8-inch apart. If you sew your puppet on a machine, your stitches may be closer. Closer stitches make for a more durable puppet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pull your stitches tight but not so tight that the fabric bunches up.
