The zigzag stitch is a useful stitch to have on any sewing machine. You can use the zigzag stitch to finish seams and you can use it to make decorative stitches as well. It does take a bit of practice to get used to making, so always test your zigzag stitches on a sample before you start.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Read the directions for your sewing machine to know how to set the zigzag stitch. Learn how to adjust the stitch length as well as the width. Minor changes in either of these settings can change the appearance of the zigzag.

  2. Step 2

Finish a seam with a zigzag. Stitch a 5/8 inch seam. Press it open. Zigzag stitch through one layer of one side of the seam allowance. Repeat on the other side.

  3. Step 3

Sew a decorative edging on an item. Set the stitch length and width to the desired setting. Change the top thread to a contrasting thread if you wish. Sew a line of zigzag ½ inch in from the folded edge of the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Use the zigzag stitch to appliqué an item in place. Cut out the desired pattern and pin it in place. Set the sewing machine to the desired width and length. Start the zigzag pattern on a straight edge of the appliqué piece. When you get to a corner, stop, raise the presser foot, make the turn and lower the presser foot before proceeding. To sew a curved edge, go extremely slow so you don't run off the edge of the fabric.

  5. Step 5

Make a zigzag hem. Set the sewing machine to a short zigzag stitch length and a narrow width. Sew the fabric. Trim close to the zigzag stitches but do not cut them.
