Making a shower curtain is a fairly simple project that requires straight sewing. By creating your own shower curtain, you have the freedom to choose the fabric and finish a curtain that's just the right length. Because a plastic liner is added when the shower curtain is hung, almost any fabric can be used for this project.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a light or medium weight fabric for the shower curtain rod. Pick a pattern and color that coordinates with the bathroom decor.

  2. Step 2

Purchase at least 4 yards of a fabric that is 45-inches wide. Choose a second, contrasting fabric for the tabs across the top of the shower curtain.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the fabric is pressed and wrinkle-free. Square up the corners so that the edges are even at either end.

  4. Step 4

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise so that it's 2-yards long and two layers thick. Use the scissors to cut through the folded end to produce two pieces of fabric, each 2 yards long.

  5. Step 5

Note the top and bottom edge of each length of fabric. Mark one piece at the fold as a top edge and the other piece as the bottom edge.

  6. Step 6

Unfold the two lengths of fabric. Turn them with the top edges together. Determine along which side seam the two lengths are to be sewn together. Note the direction of any pattern or nap.

  7. Step 7

Pin the seam together, lining up the edges of the fabric. Set the pins into the fabric perpendicular to the sewing line. Turn the points of straight pins out towards the edge of the fabric.
