Of all the parts of a drawstring backpack, the casing that houses the drawstring cord is most important since it bears the most wear and tear. Your child's backpack gets a lot of use, so take time with the construction of this piece.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cut two pieces of fabric for the front and back of the backpack. A good size for a child is 15 by 20 inches. Use heavyweight fabric like denim, twill or corduroy.

  2. Step 2

Fold the top edge of both fabric pieces to form a 1 ½-inch hem. Iron it flat.

  3. Step 3

Use the presser foot as your sewing guide. Use the same close, neat stitch as you would in topstitching any hem. Remove the pins before the sewing machine needle gets to them and avoid damage to your machine or eyeball.

  4. Step 4

Tuck the raw edge of the hem under about ¼ inch and pin on both pieces of fabric. Take the first piece of fabric and backstitch at one end of the hem to reinforce your stitches.

  5. Step 5

Use the presser foot as a guide as you stitch straight across the hem. Remove pins before the sewing machine needle gets to them and avoid damage to your machine or eyeball.

  6. Step 6

End your stitching with a backstitch for reinforcement. Review for loose stitches and give it tug to test strength. Repeat Steps 4 through 6 to sew the casing on the other piece of fabric.

Tips & Warnings
  • Invest in heavier 40 or 50 weight polyester or nylon thread. Stronger thread adds longevity and durability to the backpack casing.
  • Take care when ironing around pins, especially ones with plastic tops. They may melt and ruin your fabric and iron.
