If you have basic sewing skills, you can create a straight valance to add interest to any room. Using simple straight seams, you can sew a curtain. Attached it to a board covred in fabric to hang over a window.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay the valance fabric flat on a table or other work surface, with the most attractive side up. Do the same with the lining fabric, which you have cut to the same size as the valance fabric.

  2. Step 2

Place the valance fabric on top with the attractive side down. Ensure that the two blocks of fabric match on all edges.

  3. Step 3

Pin the two fabrics together along one long edge. If the valance fabric pattern defines an "up" direction, pin along the bottom edge.

  4. Step 4

Sew the long pinned edges together. Leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance by sewing the edges together 1/2 inch from the raw edges. Use a straight stitch and relatively small stitches.

  5. Step 5

Turn the fabrics right side out. Roll down the seam allowing 1/2 inch of valance fabric to be visible on the back. Iron the seam flat. Let the fabric cool before proceeding.

  6. Step 6

Switch the fabrics to the wrong side out again, letting the valance fabric crease where it was ironed as the two fabrics lay together on the short edges.

  7. Step 7

Tack the valance fabric and lining fabric together on each short end with pins. Sew each with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Reverse the fabrics right side out, letting the bottom edge crease where it was ironed in Step 4.

  8. Step 8

Iron along all three seams after turning the short ends inside out exactly at the seam. Cut the extra 1/2 inch of lining fabric from the top edge and baste the edges together. Adhere the curtain to the valance board.
