Step 1
Purchase a covered button kit that has enough buttons in it to complete the task. Read the package directions carefully. While the process to cover buttons is similar with all the kits, some companies provide slightly different directions.
-
Step 2
Cut out the circle template that comes with the kit.
-
Step 3
Cut circles in the fabric that you intend to use to cover the buttons. Follow the circle template exactly. If you cut too much, you may not be able to snap the button shut. If you don't cut the circle large enough, there may not be enough fabric to cover the button properly.
-
Step 4
Lay the fabric circle right side down inside the concave tool that comes with the kit. Place the solid metal button cover in the concave tool as well.
-
Step 5
Bring the edge of the fabric to the inside of the metal cover. Make sure the teeth grip the fabric firmly. If necessary, use the pencil eraser to push the fabric firmly onto the teeth.
-
Step 6
Place the back of the covered button in place on top. You now have a stack of fabric, button cover and button back.
-
Step 7
Apply firm pressure to the back of the button. You should feel it snap into place. Sew your covered button on the fabric.
