Things You'll Need:
- Paper towel tube
- Dried beans or beads
- Cardstock
- Patterned paper
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
-
Step 1
Gather an assortment of cardstock and patterned paper and decide what type of design you'd like to create. Decorate the tube with short or long stripes, plaids or diagonal lines. Check out images of some authentic rain sticks for inspiration (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Tear a piece of paper. For a torn line with a textured edge, just grab the piece at the end and make one long tear. For a more jagged edge, grip the paper between your fingertips and move them along as you make small tears across the paper. If you want a nearly smooth tear, fold the paper and wet the edge before ripping it or tear it along a metal ruler.
-
Step 3
Tear enough strips to cover the tube. If you want the pattern to stretch from one end to the other, create several strips. You also can cover the tube with a solid piece. Just measure enough paper to wrap around the tube and affix it with glue stick or double-stick tape. Add a few torn strips to one end.
-
Step 4
Coat the back of one strip with a glue stick or a thin line of liquid glue. Adding too much will cause the paper to wrinkle and warp. Press it onto the tube and hold for a few seconds until it's secure. Repeat the process until you've completed your pattern and covered the tube.
