When you pick out your vegetables, you'll want to get the freshest options available from your grocery store or farmer's market. When you carefully pick fresh leafy vegetables, like lettuce, spinach and cabbage, you'll ensure that your salads won't wilt.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the display case for the leafy vegetables at the grocery store. Check that it's clean and reasonably cool. Don't pick the lettuce and other vegetables stored on top of ice since this leads to premature spoiling later.

  2. Step 2

Check for signs of spoiling. When leafy veggies start to spoil, brown spots appear on the stems. Avoid any leafy vegetables with brown or limp leaves.

  3. Step 3

Note the crispness. If you want the freshest veggies, you should look for ones which appear very crisp. Test the crispness by snapping one of the leaves. You should hear a distinct sound when snapping the lettuce leaf in two.

  4. Step 4

Judge the color of the leafy vegetables. You should notice a dark, rich color. If it's a lighter shade, your store may have pulled away the outer leaves of the vegetable due to spoiling.

Tips & Warnings
  • While shopping, keep the leafy vegetables at the top of the cart and refrigerate them immediately once you arrive home.
