How to Dice Onions to Make Stuffing

When you dice an onion for stuffing, you want small pieces that blend in with the other ingredients. Large onion pieces can overpower the other vegetables and seasonings and interfere with the smooth texture of the stuffing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Freeze an onion for 15 minutes or so before dicing so that you don't bring on tears during the cutting process.

  2. Step 2

Cut an onion in half lengthwise. Leave the stem on so that it holds the layers together. Peel the skin off the onion and place it cut side down on a cutting board, with the stem piece facing upwards.

  3. Step 3

Slice the onion lengthwise, without slicing through the stem piece. The more slices you make in the onion, the finer your dice is for the stuffing.

  4. Step 4

Turn the onion and make a horizontal slice in the middle, creating two sections. Starting opposite from the stem, begin making horizontal cuts through the onion.

  5. Step 5

Chop up any large pieces of onion you missed while dicing. Scoop up your onions and add them to your stuffing.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can skip cutting the onion in half horizontally. Simply turn the onion and make horizontal cuts, which will result in a larger dice.
