If you're serving smothered chicken to your guests, you almost have to serve rice as an accompaniment. You must prepare the rice so that its flavor can stand up to the entree without being overwhelmed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rice
  • Cold water
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Fork
  1. Step 1

Select the variety of rice you want to serve with the chicken. Brown, jasmine, white or flavored rice mixes can work. Rinse your rice in cold water to wash away talc or starch. Then soak the rice for 30 minutes. Soaking the rice shortens cooking times and creates less brittle grains, which can break during cooking. Drain the rice prior to cooking.

  2. Step 2

Follow measurements on the rice package. Wait until the water boils before adding the rice. Turn the fire to low and add butter, salt, pepper and any other seasoning. Add broth from the smothered chicken for added flavor.

  3. Step 3

Cover the pot and allow the steam and low heat to cook the rice. Remove the rice from the heat once most of the water has cooked off. Allow the rice to rest for about 5 minutes off the stove before serving it. Use a fork to mix or fluff the rice before serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • Substitute brown rice for white to create a healthier smothered chicken dish.
  • Save time by cooking rice in the microwave.
  • Use a rice cooker if you cook a lot of rice.
