Consider the design of the flat beater. Its design is sturdier than the wire whisk, so it can handle normal to heavy consistencies. There are open areas in the beater, so the food you're mixing moves from side to side, through the openings and all around the mixing bowl.

Choose the flat beater to mix cakes, cookie dough, pie crust, quick breads and biscuits. You can use it for anything that requires mixing or beating at a low to medium high-speed setting. The higher settings are best for whipping, in which case, the wire whisk attachment might be a better choice.

Mix bread ingredients together using the flat beater, then change to the dough hook to continue blending in the remaining flour and kneading the dough.

Cream potatoes with the flat beater, to create smooth lump free mashed potatoes. Once you've blended the ingredients together, crank the speed up to a medium-high setting and beat them until smooth and creamy. It's almost impossible to obtain the same consistency with a potato masher.

Add dried fruit, nuts or chocolate chips to your recipe and blend them into the batter on a low speed setting with the flat beater. The construction of the beater allows you to fold the additions into the batter without beating them to death.
