How to Season and Flour a Roast

Serve up a hot, juicy roast beef, and everybody at your table will be delighted. Although cooking a roast is a fairly simple process, one secret to a roast that will stand out from all the others is to properly flour and season it to enhance the natural flavor of the beef.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roast beef with most of the fat trimmed off
  • Shallow dish or pie plate
  • All purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  1. Step 1

    Place the all purpose flour into the shallow dish or pie plate.

  2. Step 2

    Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Stir it to make sure the salt and pepper are completely blended with the flour.

  3. Step 3

    Place the roast beef in the pan of flour, and push it into the flour to coat it. Turn the roast so that each side is coated, and repeat until the roast is completely covered. Use your hands to push the flour mixture into any missed spots on the roast.

  4. Step 4

    Add more salt and pepper, if desired and press it into the roast with your hands.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a slight flavor variation to the pot roast by adding a small amount of garlic powder or garlic salt to the flour mixture.
  • A dash of ground oregano, ground basil or nutmeg will add a slightly different flavor to your roast beef. Be sure to limit the addition to a dash, Strong flavors can detract from, rather than enhance, the natural flavor of the beef.
