The Fishbone Braid is also called the Herringbone Braid. It's a simple braid and consistent tension must be maintained on the strands of hair being worked. Practice the braid itself and then work to keep the hair pulled taut.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush or comb the hair so that it is smooth and tangle-free. Gather the section of hair to be braided in the left hand and separate it into two strands with the left index finger. Finish pulling the two strands apart with the right hand.

  2. Step 2

Gather a small section of hair from the right side, move it over the index finger and incorporate it into the left hand strand. Hold it between the index finger and thumb.

  3. Step 3

Take both strands into the right hand. Pull a small section of hair from the left side, pull it over the index finger and incorporate it with the right side strands. Hold it between the index finger and thumb as in Step 2.

  4. Step 4

Take both strands of hair into the left hand again. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until all the hair is incorporated into the braid. Hold the left strand in the left hand and the right strand in the right.

  5. Step 5

Push the right index finger with the palm up through the rear portion of the right strand. Separate a small section from the strand.

  6. Step 6

Turn the right palm down. Add the newly separated section to the left hand. Use the left index finger to pull a small section from the rear of the left strand. Turn the left palm down and add the newly separated section to the right-hand strand.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Step 5 and 6 to the end of the braid. Fasten with a elastic ponytail holder.
