How to Fix Flat Hair

Good hair days can be few and far between when you have "flat hair." With practice and proper hair care, though, you'll be on your way to getting rid of your flat hair problems and developing hair that others long for.

1. Use volumizing hair care products. These are the first step toward lively hair. The "Amplify" product line by Matrix thickens your hair while you're washing and styling. Choose products ranging from shampoos and conditioners to a volumizing "Root Lifter" or "Thick Boost Gel."

2. Blow-dry your hair while using a metal-wired hairbrush. The hairbrush will heat as you dry, which allows you to style your hair as you go. If you want to curl your hair under, you can use the hairbrush and work it under as you're drying. You can do the same for an "out flip" of your hair. Drying your hair in the opposite direction of how you wear it can help prevent flatness.

3. Curl your hair with a curling iron. If you want volume toward the top and front of your hair--the bangs area--use a curling iron with styling spray. A large curling iron can give more volume as compared to a smaller one.

4. Tease your hair. Take a section of hair and at the roots, use a comb or brush to brush or "tap" the hair downward. Just a little teasing can give volume to flat hair.

5. Consider a haircut. If nothing seems to work to fix your flat hair, getting long layers cut into your hair can help.

• Switch your part. If your hair gets used to being styled toward a certain direction, it can become flat. By styling it to the other side, it can give your hair some life.
• If you have naturally curly hair, avoid teasing as that may cause your hair to frizz.
