A French manicure's natural look complements any outfit and is appropriate for any type of occasion. But keeping up with a French manicure by going to a salon gets expensive. Learn to apply a French manicure yourself and keep your nails looking great for less.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White fingernail polish
  • Acetone
  • Bowl
  • Manicure brush
  1. Step 1

Locate the smile line on your fingernails. The smile line is the white part of the nail that curves around the top. The smile line looks just like an upside-down smile.

  2. Step 2

Apply white nail polish to the smile line of each fingernail. Begin with the outer edges. Gently brush on white nail polish slightly deeper to the ends of the smile line. Fill in the middle of the smile line with white nail polish using quick, shallow strokes.

  3. Step 3

Brush on a second coat. Apply the second layer to each fingernail. Make the second coat thicker than the first. If you wear fake nails, brush the polish on the upper edge of the nails for a more natural look.

  4. Step 4

Clean up the smile lines. Give your French manicure a professional look and even out the smile lines. Pour a small amount of acetone into the bowl. Dip your brush into the acetone and brush the acetone underneath it.

  5. Step 5

Finish the French manicure. Remove any white nail polish on the tips or edges of your fingers. Dip your brush in the acetone and gently brush away any polish on your skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Traditional French manicures use white nail polish. Give your French manicure a festive flair and apply holiday colors during the holiday season.
  • Always remove old nail polish before beginning your French manicure.
  • Use a tip guide to keep your smile line looking professional. Purchase them at your local beauty store.
