Portuguese is a beautiful language that is spoken in Portugal and all over Brazil. When traveling to either of these two countries, you should know how to ask about the time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Say, "Que horas são?" to ask the time. It means, "What time is it?"

  2. Step 2

Answer the question with "São...." This means, "It is...." This phrase can be used to express the time or in other situations, as well.

  3. Step 3

Tell someone that it is noon by using the phrase "É meio dia." Tell someone that it is midnight by saying "É meia noite." These two common phrases in Portuguese are used more often than simply saying, "It is 12:00."

  4. Step 4

Express "cedo" to mean early and "tarde" to mean late. You can add these to say, "São cedo," ("It is early") or "São tarde" ("It is late"). Use phrases that you have already learned to build new phrases, and this will expand your Portuguese vocabulary.

  5. Step 5

Pronounce the word "hora," which means hour without saying the H. The H is silent. The word "minuto" means minute.

  6. Step 6

Practice telling time in Portuguese every day. The more you practice, the better you will remember the words and phrases, and soon you will tell everyone about the time in Portuguese.

  7. Step 7

Buy and use a good Portuguese dictionary and phrase book. A small book would be most convenient because you could carry a small book around with you and use it anytime and anywhere in the Portuguese speaking world.
