Poser provides artists with 3-D character generation and animation software. With the Face Room, artists can construct 3-D models of their family and friends from photos.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create two practice "photos" using Poser. The Face Room needs a G2 model to build a custom face. These models look different than Daz3D's Michael and Victoria. Bring Michael into the Pose Room. Select "Face Camera." Set the focal length to 100 mm. Adjust the zTrans distance to -0.600. Give Michael a special look using facial morphs.

  2. Step 2

Add five ambient lights to your scene. Arrange them in a star formation around Michael's face. Set Red, Green, Blue Parameters to 1.000 for each light. This removes all color from the light. Reduce the middle lights' intensity to 50 percent. Reduce the outer lights to 30 percent.

  3. Step 3

Render the front picture with dimensions of 600 by 600 pixels and a resolution of 600 pixels per inch. Save the file in JPG format in your photo directory. Rotate Michael's body 90 degrees, place Michael in the center of the window, render and save the second image.

  4. Step 4

Load the front image into the Face Room. Click the left eye in the image and the right corner of the mouth in answer to Poser's prompts. Load the side image into Poser and click the top of the ear and the tip of the chin. A red outline with green points will surround the face. Align the red outline with the face's shape. Adjust the green dots to match key facial elements like the eyes, nose and lips.

  5. Step 5

Check "Apply Shape." Information from the red outline and green dots is transferred to the digital face in the face-sculpting window. Examine it for accuracy. Choose "Apply Shape Only" to create your digital clone. Return to the Pose window.

  6. Step 6

Take two pictures of your subject in a well-lit area. Use either a digital or instant camera. Photos for the Face Room break the rules of portrait photography. For the frontal photo, have the subject look directly into the camera without smiling. If the subject has a lot of hair, tuck it into a bathing cap. Upload the images into your computer and repeat steps 1 to 5 with actual photos.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not click "Apply to Figure" when the face is finished. The texture will only appear on the face and not match the body's texture.
