Getting places on time is often more difficult during the winter months. If your windshield is iced over, getting your car ready to go may take longer than normal. Be prepared. Know how to deice your windshield and be on the road in no time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a can of deicer. Look for it in the automotive section of your local discount department store. Choose one that contains an alcohol-based solvent. Alcohol decreases the freezing point of water and melts ice off the windshield.

  2. Step 2

Store the deicer so it is readily available. Keep it in your garage throughout the winter months. If your windshield ices over frequently during your work hours, carry a can of deicer in the car.

  3. Step 3

Apply the deicer. Shake the can vigorously before using. Spray a light coating of deicer over the windshield and windshield wipers. Insert the applicator straw into the nozzle of the can. Fill the interior of the windshield wipers with deicer.

  4. Step 4

Let the deicer do the work. Avoid the temptation to blast the ice off with the deicer. Spray the deicer gently and wait calmly for a couple of minutes as the chemicals melt the ice.

Tips & Warnings
  • If there is a thick layer of accumulated precipitation underneath your wipers, spray deicer on them and gently jiggle them loose with the palm of your hand.
  • Turn your car on and run your defrost to warm up the windshield from the inside.
  • Avoid using hot water to deice your windshield. It is only a temporary solution. The water refreezes after extended exposure to freezing temperatures.
