You've sent in your resume, and the company is impressed with you on paper. But in the journalism industry, you have to impress them with your appearance, too. Whether you're interviewing as a newspaper, radio or television journalist, you must come across as a credible individual. In most journalists' careers, there is a lot of interaction with the public. Making a good first impression is key to a professional and successful career. Always dress to impress.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Dress for Men

Step1
Go shopping if you don't have appropriate clothes. In anticipation of getting the job, you'll want three to five button-down collar shirts, four ties and two pairs of slacks. Mixing and matching your wardrobe gives you a new outfit for two full work weeks.
Step2
For the interview, pick a solid-color shirt like deep blue or forest green, colors that enhance your skin tone.
Step3
Match your tie to your selected shirt. Most ties have patterns, which is why you want to wear a solid shirt.
Step4
Choose khaki-colored, black or charcoal gray slacks.
Step5
Try on your clothing the day before the interview to ensure that everything fits properly.
Step6
Iron all of your garments.
Step7
Put on your clothing and look into the mirror before you leave the house to make sure that everything is neat and in proper place.

Dress for Women

Step1
Go shopping. Women tend to feel better about themselves when they have a new outfit to wear. An interview is the perfect excuse to get a new business suit.
Step2
Buy a three-piece business suit, including a skirt or slacks, white button-down blouse and blazer. Choose a suit color that complements your skin tone.
Step3
Try on your outfit before the big day to make sure the garments fit properly.
Step4
Iron your clothes if necessary.
Step5
Comb your hair neatly and apply minimal makeup.
Step6
Dress and look into the mirror before you leave for the interview to make sure everything is neat and in proper place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Men should always wear black socks when wearing dress slacks because the pant legs tend to ride up when sitting.
  • Women should wear a shoe with a heel, if they are comfortable walking in heels, because it gives a little extra height.
  • Women should stay away from bright red lipstick and colored eye shadow. Use browns and pale pink for a natural glow.
