Step 1
Decide on the plot of the play and ask yourself the following questions: Who is the main character? What is the conflict? What does the character desire? What obstacles does the character confront? How does the character react to obstacles and to other characters? Does the character accomplish his task? How does this affect the character's world?
-
Step 2
Take detailed notes as you flesh out the character and answer the questions in Step 1. The character's background also needs to include where she is from, her family, job, friends and time period and location of the play.
-
Step 3
Map out the relationships among the different characters in the play and how they interact with the main character. Everyone in the play needs to either help the main character or be an obstacle for him to overcome.
-
Step 4
Make the dialogue in the play revolve around the main character and his conflict or journey. All the dialogue in the play needs to push the plot toward your ultimate goal for the character. Idle conversations are not needed unless they serve the plot.
-
Step 5
Choose whether you want to resolve the character's conflicts or obstacles. Will he succeed or fail? Write how the character is changed by the conflict and how his conflict changes others.
