The side to side steps adds a little more to the basic cumbia dance. The same adhesion to the beat is observed, though the shifts of weight become quicker as you travel from one side to another. Soon, you'll be able to build upon these basic steps as you learn this fun and sexy dance.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin the side to side cumbia by stepping to the right with your right foot, and bringing your left foot over until it rests beside it.

  2. Step 2

Step to the right again with your right foot, and slide over to the right again with your left foot.

  3. Step 3

Move your left foot over to the left before you complete the slide to the right in step three, and slide your right foot over to meet your left as you do side to side cumbia steps.

  4. Step 4

Go over to the left again with your left foot and begin the slide to the left with your right foot. Before you reach your left foot with your right, step over to the left again, and repeat Step 1.

  5. Step 5

Remember to pause with the music at the ends of each slide when you are doing the side to side cumbia--that is, the transition just before you begin to step over in the other direction.

  6. Step 6

Move your arms in the same manner as you would with the basic step. Allow your hands to rotate in small circles as your arms bend at the elbows. Keep your hands from rotating above your shoulders and below your waist.
