How to Do Cumbia Dance Step Turns

As you begin to learn the basic cumbia steps and get more comfortable with them, you'll want to add turns. Start with a basic turn for yourself, and once you've mastered it, you'll want to do it with your partner as well. Here's how to do cumbia turns.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Begin the cumbia turn by starting with the basic cumbia dance step. Step back with your right foot, slightly pivoting on your left foot so that you step not only behind your left foot but also to the side; step in place with your left foot, then step forward with your right foot.

  2. Step 2

    Add a little kick forward with your left foot before you step back and a little to the side with your left foot, step in place with your right foot, then step forward with your left foot. Add a little kick forward with your right foot before you step back with your right foot.

  3. Step 3

    Step in place with your left foot, then add the cumbia turn by stepping straight forward with your right foot, pivoting on it so that you turn around to the left until you face the back of the room.

  4. Step 4

    Move back with your left foot after you do the cumbia turn, step in place with your right foot. Step forward with your left foot, and pivot on the ball of your foot as you turn around to the left; face forward again and step back with your right foot.

  5. Step 5

    Resume the basic cumbia dance steps after you complete the two turns. With practice, you'll find that you will be able to complete the turns easily and in time with the distinctive beat of cumbia music.
