How to Do a Right Turn in Salsa Dancing

As you get better in salsa, you'll begin to add turns to your dance steps. The right turn is one of the simpler turns, and with a little practice, you and your partner will be able to do it together quite successfully. This will get you started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take the modified ballroom hold with your partner as you prepare to do the right turn in salsa. Place your left hand on your partner's right shoulder, and place your left hand on your partner's right hand. He'll place his right hand on your back, just below your shoulder blade.

  2. Step 2

Step back with your right foot as your partner steps forward with his left foot. Step in place with your left foot as you partner steps in place with his right foot. Move forward with your left foot as your partner steps back with his right foot.

  3. Step 3

Place your feet together on the seventh beat—your partner will do the same—as you prepare to do the right turn. As your partner drops his hand from your back, take a step back with your right foot as your partner steps back with his left, your hands clasped.

  4. Step 4

Go forward with your right foot as your partner places his left foot beside his right and holds your clasped hands up, elbows bent, guiding you into the right turn.

  5. Step 5

Move forward with your left foot and turn to the right beneath your upraised hands, as you partner continues the salsa dance by stepping back with his right foot.

  6. Step 6

Turn all the way around until you face your partner again, resume the modified ballroom stance, and continue with the basic salsa step before doing another turn to the right in salsa dancing.
