Covering walls with original artwork is a rewarding experience for both the artist and the viewer. There are several methods for transferring sketches and artwork from the page to the wall; three ways are outlined below.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Sketch out a design or artwork that will comprise the final wall mural. Not all art or design works well for the mural medium. Consider landscapes with a clear vanishing point for the best mural effect.

  2. Step 2

Transfer the design from the sketchpad or paper to a plastic projection sheet. Complete this at most copy stores; it is a necessary step for the projection method. It is always a good idea to call the copy store first to make sure they have projection sheets in stock.

  3. Step 3

Place a plastic sheet with the mural design onto the projector and switch on. Manipulate the projector until the mural is superimposed on the wall in the position you desire.

  4. Step 4

Turn off the room lights to increase the visibility of the projected mural on the wall before tracing over the design with a soft pencil. Steps 2 through 4 comprise the projection method of transferring a sketch to the wall.

  5. Step 5

Use a pencil and ruler to draw a light grid work of lines across your sketch. Be sure to measure the grid accurately using simple measures such as 1-inch squares. This method works well for complicated sketches with a lot of straight lines or sharp angles such as those from buildings.

  6. Step 6

Create a similar grid to that in step 5 except on the proposed mural wall. Use a simple ratio such as 1-inch square on sketch equals 1 square foot on the wall. This allows you to freehand the sketch one square at a time onto the wall.

  7. Step 7

Freehand the sketch onto the proposed mural wall using nothing but your eyes and a pencil. This is the preferred method of most artists; although not technically accurate, it is perhaps the quickest and most creative method for transferring a sketch from the notepad into a wall mural.
