Hero pose is a seated yoga pose which is often used as a transition posture or for rest or meditation. From the hero pose, you can move into a gentle twist, which helps to elongate the muscles of the spine, strengthen the legs and massage the abdominals, aiding in digestion and elimination. If you are just beginning your yoga practice, yoga blocks may help.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  • 3 yoga blocks
  1. Step 1

Rest on your knees on your yoga mat and place a block under your buttocks. Sit down onto the block with your ankles along each side, the tops of your feet resting on the mat. Place your hands gently on your upper thighs and lengthen your spine. This is the basic assisted hero pose.

  2. Step 2

Place a yoga block directly behind your and another on your left side. Inhale deeply and rotate to the left. Keep your spine tall and straight as you extend your arms. Grip the back block with your left hand and the side block with your right.

  3. Step 3

Push into the blocks to further lengthen your spine. Keep your head turning the left, breathing deeply in and out. As you inhale, focus on keeping your spine long and on the exhale, try to twist a bit deeper into the pose.

  4. Step 4

Hold the hero twist for at least five full breaths before gently exhaling back to hero pose. Move the side block to your right side and repeat the posture. As you gain flexibility in your legs and hips, you can begin practicing the pose without the assistance of your yoga blocks.
