Whether you're just starting out with T-ball or are a seasoned baseball veteran, it's important to brush up on some baseball basics. It's never too late for athletes to learn the fundamentals of baseball, one of which includes the proper way to grip a bat when batting right-handed. So whether you're using an official Louisville slugger or an aluminum bat, refresh your memory with these few steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grasp the bat with your left hand, called the control hand, above the bat's knob. Put your hand an inch or two above the knob. This hand helps determine the direction in which the ball should land. Your left hand is also your lead hand, so it should be held tighter on the bat than the right hand.

  2. Step 2

Place your right hand, called your power hand, above the left hand. Avoid any gaps between the two hands. This hand provides the pivot point when you hit the ball with the bat.

  3. Step 3

Align your middle knuckles of your right hand with the knuckles closest to your wrist on your left hand. This can give added flexibility, allowing for more power and control during your swing.

  4. Step 4

Hold the bat chest high in front of your right shoulder once you step up to the right-handed side of the plate.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you hear people refer to "choking up" on the bat, they mean to hold the bat higher up by moving your grip away from the knob. The downside to this is you lose power in your swing. Beginners should choke up, since it's more important to make contact with the ball than to hit a home run.
  • Don't grip the baseball bat too tightly when batting right-handed. Doing this tightens your muscles, making it more difficult to react to the pitch. You want a relaxed grip to help you react faster.
