Decorating and preparing a nursery for your unborn child is an exciting time for expectant mothers. There's so many cute baby accessories on the market today it's enjoyable to spend months planning and shopping. In your excitement of getting your baby's room perfect before their arrival, remember to keep safety a priority and make sure everything in the room, including decorative curtains are babyproofed.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Choose curtains that don't pose a choking hazard. Sheer curtains, while pretty, can be torn easily by sharp little fingernails and ingested and choked on. Some baby girl curtains have beads that are either sewn on individually or that hang in vertical columns on the curtains. Keep these adorable curtains out of your child's room as the beads can come loose easily.
Step2
Install a sturdy metal curtain rod. When installing the rod, use drywall anchors for the screws if you can't find a wall stud. This will keep your curtain rod securely attached to the wall.
Step3
Mount wall hooks to tie the curtains back during the day. Similar to the curtain rod, make sure you either hit a wall stud or use drywall anchors to ensure the wall hooks are securely attached to the wall. This will keep the curtains more close together leaving less room for them to be pulled on.
Step4
Childproof any strings that are dangling on the window blinds if you have them as well. Loose strings are a strangulation hazard so ensure they're securely locked or out of your child's reach even if you have curtains covering them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use a tension rod to hang your child's curtains. Once your child becomes mobile and can pull on them, the rod can become loose and fall either entangling your child in the curtains or falling on them and cause an injury.
