The tambourine is a percussion instrument used in many different types of bands and music. It is usually played with the hands, but can also be played with a mallet or a drum stick. There are different ways to hit a tambourine. Each different way creates a unique sound.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the tambourine horizontally. This will prevent the jingles from clashing together randomly. Make sure it is level, otherwise you may get an unwanted jingle sound.

  2. Step 2

Strike the tambourine with your fingertips. You can strike it anywhere on the head of the tambourine; however, the best sound is made about 3/4 inch inward from the edge. You will have most control when striking the tambourine with your fingertips.

  3. Step 3

Hit the tambourine with the palm of your hand. This will make the jingles ring out a lot more. Once again, you can hit the tambourine anywhere on the head with the palm of your hand.

  4. Step 4

Beat the tambourine with your fist. This will produce a louder sound. However, do not hit it too hard because you could bust the head with your fist.

  5. Step 5

Tap the tambourine with a mallet or a drum stick. A mallet or a drum stick will allow you to have more tone and rhythm when playing the tambourine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shake the tambourine lightly as you hit it. This will add some more jingles to the rhythm you are playing.
  • Practice different ways of hitting the tambourine until you find a way that is most appropriate.
