Knowing how to maintain your electric guitar can save you time, money and lost gigs. Learn how to change (cut) the old strings on your electric guitar and you'll be on your way to a full and busy music career.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Understand how a guitar is set up and how the strings are attached. This will aid in the process of changing the guitar strings without having to stop and call or visit a guitar professional. The strings are attached to the pegs and then at the bottom of the gourd section of the guitar.
Step2
Gather the necessary tools. This should include a set of needle nose pliers, string winders and something to cut the strings with, and of course the new pack of strings. Decide how you are going to replace the strings-one at a time or all at once. Doing it one at a time, allows you to tune the new strings to the old ones. It also keeps tension on the neck and body of the guitar.
Step3
Loosen the strings, then thread one out of the back of the guitar, through the slot there. Once you have pulled the string completely out (this will require a good yank) the rest of the strings will be loose. Use a cutting utensil to cut through the strings and pull them loose from the guitar.
Step4
Pull all of the strings out through the slot in the back of the guitar. Using this method will ensure you have removed all the ball endings that are on the strings. If you try to pull them from the front, the ball could break off and then be jangling around the inside of the electric guitar.
