How to Pick House Plants

House plants brighten a space, and help purify the air pulling carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and benzene. All house plants aren't created the same and require different types of care. Take the time to research the needs and care of various plants and choose the ones that suit your space and lifestyle.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Decide the best locations in the house for the plants. Figure out the exposure of the potential location, and whether the location gets direct or indirect sunlight.

  2. Step 2

    Choose locations away from heat registers and cold air ducts. Set plants in a spot where they won't get bumped a lot by people moving pass it. Select a corner of the room, near or opposite a window.

  3. Step 3

    Research the best plants for the environment. Talk to an expert at a greenhouse or garden store. Learn which plants are high maintenance and which ones thrive with less care.

  4. Step 4

    Pot the plant in a container that is suitable to its size and let the plant then grow into the pot. Resist the temptation to use a big pot for a small plant with the hopes that it maturesto a size suitable for the plant. Choose appropriate size pots for the best growth results.

  5. Step 5

    Find out what kind of light and water each plant needs. Make notes or label each pot until the routine is familiar.

  6. Step 6

    Spray plants regularly with a mister bottle to increase humidity and decrease the chances of an infestation. Feed plants on a regular basis, depending on their needs. Replenish the soil as needed.

  7. Step 7

    Dust plants regularly with a feather duster. Clean broad leafed plants with a soft, damp cloth.
