How to Plant Crocosmia Lucifer Bulbs

The Crocosmia Lucifer, also known as Falling Stars, bulb produces blooms in mid-summer for three to four weeks. Crocosmia Lucifer's flowers are usually dark red, yellow or orange and appear on slender, dark green, gladiola-like stems that grow in a clumping formation. Crocosmia Lucifer can reach more than two feet in height with a fairly narrow flower spread.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Plan on planting your Crocosmia Lucifer bulbs in mid-spring.

  2. Step 2

    Select a planting site where the Crocosmia Lucifer can get full sun throughout the day.

  3. Step 3

    Dig planting holes 2 inches apart and 5 inches deep.

  4. Step 4

    Plant one Crocosmia Lucifer bulb per hole.

  5. Step 5

    Water the newly-planted Crocosmia Lucifer bulbs and keep the soil moist throughout the growing season. This bulb can handle drier soil conditions but it grows best with moist soil.

  6. Step 6

    Mulch as colder temperatures approach in zones 6 and 7. Zones eight and south do not require mulching for the Crocosmia Lucifer bulbs to winter in the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Crocosmia Lucifer bulb is considered semi-hardy and is intolerant of temperatures below 28 degrees F.
  • Best use of the Crocosmia Lucifer is made in flower borders and beds and as cut flowers. They are also a favorite of hummingbirds and so make a good choice for bird gardens.
  • Crocosmia Lucifer bulbs grow well in crowded conditions and do not easily choke themselves out.
