Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant bulbs produce a carmine, or bluish red, flower with purple and green leaves. The Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant grows to about two feet tall and thrives in full to partial sun in zones 6 through 10. The Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant flowers through late summer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a spot in your garden that gets full sun during a good portion of the day. In extremely hot climates, select a spot that is sheltered in partial shade during the hottest part of the day.

  2. Step 2

Test your soil if you don't already know your soil's pH. Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant bulbs require slightly acidic soil to thrive. Use a basic soil test available at home and garden stores or plant nurseries.

  3. Step 3

Add compost, peat or manure to the soil to lower the pH and make it more acidic, if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Dig holes in the soil that are 6 to 8 inches apart.

  5. Step 5

Plant the Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant bulbs 3 to 5 inches down in groups of three. Arrange the bulbs in triangles.

  6. Step 6

Water the area after planting. Keep the soil moist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant bulbs are a staple of any hummingbird garden because the tiny birds love this bulb's flowers.
  • Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant bulbs produce a seed pod that looks great in dried flower arrangements.
  • Crocosmia Carmine Brilliant bulbs multiply quickly. You must dig them up and separate them so the new bulbs won't choke out the old and prevent the flowers from thriving. Dig them up anytime the bulbs are not blooming and replant all the bulbs immediately.
