The Canna Pretoria bulb, also known as Bengal Tiger, produces a 6-foot tall flower stalk topped with bright yellow-orange flowers. Its leaves are a variegated stripe of yellow and green. The plant is at home when in the garden or in pots and is easily potted and submerged for use as an accent in water gardens.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Select a place in your garden that gets full sun during a large portion of the day.
Step2
Analyze the composition of the soil with a soil testing kit to determine its acidity. Canna Pretoria requires slightly acidic soil, so if your soil is too alkaline the bulb will not thrive.
Step3
Increase the acidity of your soil if necessary by adding peat, compost or manure.
Step4
Dig holes that are 9 to 12 inches apart and approximately 3 inches deep.
Step5
Place one Pretoria Canna bulb in each hole lying long ways so the ends are exposed. Growth extends from each end of the bulb so both ends of the bulb need to have equal access to upward growth.
Step6
Cover the bulbs with soil so there is a 1-inch layer over the bulbs.
Step7
Water frequently to keep the soil moist. Do not let the soil dry out between waterings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Canna Pretoria bloom all summer until the first frost.
