The Durban Canna is a showy plant with vibrant red flower stalks that grow up to 10 feet in height. This plant can be a garden saver as it flowers in the heat of the middle and late summer in zones 7 through 10 when most other flowering plants stop producing. Durban can be cultivated in containers and used in any sunny area of the garden.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select an area in your garden that gets full, hot sun.

  2. Step 2

Dig a hole 3 to 4 inches deep.

  3. Step 3

Place the bulb on its side in the hole, with the points facing out sideways.

  4. Step 4

Water the bulb and keep the soil moist throughout the growing season.

  5. Step 5

Plant additional Durban Cannas 10 to 18 inches apart because the Durban grows into a big plant. Give each bulb plenty of room to grow to maturity in its original planting spot.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Durban Canna is self cleaning, which means it sheds its flowers cleanly and does not require pruning.
  • Durban Canna bulbs multiply quickly so you may want to dig them up, separate them and replant every few years to allow plenty of room for all the bulbs to grow and flower.
  • Durban Cannas can be potted and submerged in ponds to add extra color and interest to water gardens.
