Putting tab tops on curtains is a decorative touch that can perk up an otherwise ordinary pair of curtains. You can easily sew tabs to readymade curtains or add them to your own custom-made curtains. If you have an odd-sized curtain rod or one you wish to show off, tabbed curtains are a good choice as well.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select the fabric for the tabs. It can match the curtains or it can be a coordinating fabric. The weight and texture of the tab should be similar to that of the curtains.

  2. Step 2

Determine the length of the curtain. Add how much long you want the tabs to be. Be sure to allow enough room for the curtain rod to pass through the tabs.

  3. Step 3

Shorten the curtain panels if necessary. The curtains may "puddle" or flow to the floor, but you do want to cut off any excessive amount and hem them.

  4. Step 4

Lay the tab fabric on a table. With right sides facing double the fabric. Cut out the curtain tabs in twice the length you used in Step 2. Also add one inch for seam allowance to the length and width.

  5. Step 5

Sew the fabric tabs. Start on one long side. Stitch to the corner, pivot, stitch across to the other corner and go sew back up the other long side. Trim the corners. Turn the tab right side out. Press the tab so that it lays flat.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Step 5 and 6 for all the tabs. Pin them in place when you finish.

  7. Step 7

Stitch the tabs to the top of the curtain panel. Repeat for the second curtain panel. Trim with a button on each tab if you wish.
