If you know how to stitch a straight seam, you can easily sew a designer-quality tablecloth. You can add trim to make the tablecloth unique. It's a great way to use up bits and pieces of trim left over from other projects.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine the size of the tablecloth and purchase your supplies. The fabric can be coordinating pieces or all the same color.

  2. Step 2

Prewash the fabric and trim according to the manufacturer's directions. Dry the fabric and trim. Press it if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Plan the placement of seams. Unless you find fabric wide enough for your tablecloth, you are going to have to add seams. Try to plan the seams away from the center of the tablecloth.

  4. Step 4

Put right sides of the fabric together. Sew the tablecloth together. If you sew selvage edges together, you should snip them every three inches to prevent puckering. Press the seams open.

  5. Step 5

Lay the trim on the seam. Pin it in place. Remember to place pins so the machine needle doesn't catch when you sew over them.

  6. Step 6

Stitch the trim in place. Depending on the type of trim, you can stitch it down the middle, which would put the trim stitching right down the seam line. Alternatively, you can stitch the trim on either side. If the trim is bulky, you can also use the zipper foot to sew close to the edge of the trim.

  7. Step 7

Press a 1/4-inch edge for the hem. Turn the hem another 1/2 inch. Make sure the edges of the trim are not sticking out. Sew the hem in place to finish the tablecloth.
