A roaring fire from your fireplace is a great mood setter. Whether you're starting your fire for warmth, love, or conversation, make sure that your fire is the right size for its space. Always be careful and make sure the fire doesn't get out of control.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fireplace
  • Kindling
  • Lighter
  • Screen
  • Firewood
  1. Step 1

Start a fire using paper and kindling. Rip paper into small strips and burn those first. If needed, add small pieces of cardboard or thicker paper. Place kindling on top of the burning paper. Make sure that the fledgling fire gets lots of oxygen.

  2. Step 2

Place larger logs on the fire once the kindling has burned down and you know it won't go out. Make sure you only use wood to feed your fire. Avoid burning your trash or paper products in an indoor fireplace.

  3. Step 3

Don't overfill the fireplace with wood. Most indoor fireplaces only require two to three logs or a few pellets. Overfilling the fire will cause it to get too big very quickly, increasing the chances that the fire will leave your fireplace and enter your house.

  4. Step 4

Pay attention to the fire. Embers pop out of dry wood all the time. If you leave your fire unattended, be sure a screen or glass is in front of it.

  5. Step 5

Extinguish your fire with water or a fire extinguisher when you are done. Be sure to keep the screen in front of the fire after you have put the fire out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fires are unpredictable and should be controlled with the utmost care and caution. Do not start a fire if under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
