Fertilizer is applied to assist the growth of a plant and oak trees do need occasional fertilizer. However, care must be take not to overdo the fertilizer and kill the oak tree acorns. Small amounts of fertilizer can be applied to oak tree acorns if a few simple rules are followed.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Choose the right type of fertilizer for oak tree acorns. The acorns, as young plants, cannot withstand the stronger, more concentrated fertilizers that are applied to mature trees. Choose an organic low yield fertilizer with low nitrogen and phosphorus levels.
Step2
Wait until the sprouted acorn plant shows some signs of growth before applying fertilizer. Until the acorn has a healthy top growth just allow the soil to provide the necessary nutrition.
Step3
Make certain the fertilizer is of the slow release variety. Fertilizer should not be applied more often than once every 2 weeks. A slow release variety will allow for more gentle absorption of the nutrients.
Step4
Dilute the fertilizer. A full strength fertilizer can burn the fragile feeder roots of a freshly sprouted acorn. Use rainwater, if available, to mix the fertilizer.
Step5
Apply fertilizer to the soil and not directly onto the acorn. The fertilizer should be gently sprinkled around the entire acorn. Avoid disturbing the soil around the acorn when applying fertilizer.
