When choosing the plants for a square foot garden, special care has to be taken to get the hardiest plants available. The maximum size for plants in a square foot garden should not exceed the one square foot overall area of each individual square foot garden section.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick plants for the square foot garden based on a specific theme or variety, such as all fruits or a specific vegetable. The square foot garden can also have all the ingredients needed for a salad or multiple varieties of a favorite vegetable.

  2. Step 2

Find plants that will remain small and not outgrow the square foot plot. This does not mean choose only dwarf varieties, but remember the limited size available when reading the plant descriptions.

  3. Step 3

Start seeds early in spring in order to maximize the growing season. A square foot garden is easily protected from late season frost using a sheet of plastic. Choose a combination of early maturing seeds and later bloomers to increase the time plants will be at their most viable.

  4. Step 4

Create a square foot garden based on plants from a particular region or country. Many square foot gardeners will recreate a little piece of their homeland by creating a themed garden in this manner.

  5. Step 5

Draw out decorative patterns with the plants in a square foot garden. The grid structure of the square foot garden lends itself perfectly to colorful designs such as stripes and wave patterns.
