Step 1
Find an open space with plenty of room for you to move. Driveways are probably the best because they're smooth and give you space to experiment with your hoop.
-
Step 2
Get the hula hoop going around your waist. Go with whatever speed you're the most comfortable with, but make sure it's not too slow.
-
Step 3
Keep your hips moving and slowly start to walk forward. Take one or two steps to figure the coordination out, then take a few more.
-
Step 4
Stop walking and adjust your hula hoop so it's moving in the best way possible. It'll need to be firmly around your waist and moving at a good clip to stay up while you run.
-
Step 5
Jog forward with the hoop moving around your waist. You'll need to adjust your normal running stride a bit to accommodate the extra motion. If you're having trouble keeping the hoop up, take shorter steps.
-
Step 6
Adjust the length of your stride and the speed of your hip rotation to establish an effective rhythm that keeps the hoop up while you run.
