There are lots of hula hoop tricks you can do that keep the hoop around your waist, but some of the most fun are the ones that send it somewhere else. For example, with a little practice, you can learn to throw and catch the hula hoop. This adds an exciting aerial aspect to your hooping routine and definitely gives it some variety.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the hula hoop in your good hand. For an extra challenge, you can put it in your weaker hand and continue on to the next step.

  2. Step 2

Place your index finger along the top edge of the hula hoop. Wrap your other fingers securely around the hoop.

  3. Step 3

Raise the hula hoop so your hand looks like it's pointing at something right in front of you. Instead of moving your entire arm to do this, simply lift your forearm, keeping your elbow fairly still.

  4. Step 4

Swing the hula hoop back and forth a few times to get an idea of its trajectory. Make sure you aim it straight ahead or you'll have a had time catching it.

  5. Step 5

Flick your wrist and toss the hula hoop forward. Whip the hoop with your fingers so that it's spinning toward you as it flies away from your body.

  6. Step 6

Wait for the hula hoop to hit the ground. Once it does, its spin should send it rolling right back towards you.

  7. Step 7

Nab the hula hoop once it gets close enough to grab.

Tips & Warnings
  • Throw the hula hoop onto concrete or pavement instead of grass. It'll have an easier time rolling along a surface that's smooth and firm than one that's bumpy and soft.

on 7/18/2008 That's called a backspin, hoop-la-rang or walkin the dog. A throw and catch, in hoop terms is actually a horizontal throw and a catch on the torso. Search Dizzyhips for more in depth hoop stuff including tractor tie hoopin'.
