How to Pick a Frame for a Black and White Picture

Black and white photography makes a beautiful addition to almost any home or office. However, you need to choose the frame carefully to avoid detracting from the simplicity of the photography or ruining the look. By choosing the right frame, you'll spotlight the photograph and make it a focal point.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the mat size for your black and white picture before you begin looking at frames. White is the traditional choice for black and white photography and you can adjust the size and look of the mat to highlight the particular picture you have. Black and gray mats can also be good choices depending on your picture. Deciding on the mat will help you decide on the size of the frame that you need.

  2. Step 2

Try out different frames. While a black frame is often the color choice for most people with a black and white photograph, you'll find a large range of frames within this color, not to mention wood frames or other colors.

  3. Step 3

Pay attention to the texture, pattern and color of the frame. Even with a primarily black frame, you may find other hues or hints of color. Look for a frame that has a complimentary texture, pattern and color. For example, an old fashioned black and white photograph may be able to handle a more elaborate frame than a modern macro photograph, which might need a simpler look.

  4. Step 4

Frame all of your black and white pictures in the same frame if you are doing more than one. Groups of black and white photography can create an instant focal point. By framing them in a similar frame, the look will be more uniform.

  5. Step 5

Ask the advice of a professional framer. A frame store will have the largest selection of potential frames and staff members are usually very good about picking out the frames that will look good with the particular picture. Work with the framer to get the look that you want and that highlights your picture.
