Dip pens are the only calligraphy pens that require the use of ink to load. This type of pen is equipped with various interchangeable sized nibs or tips depending on line thickness and calligraphy style. Dip pens and nibs are intricate tools needing precise care and handling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dip pen with nib
  • Ink
  • Dump sheet
  • Guard sheet
  • Writing paper
  • Blotter
  1. Step 1

Dip the nib of the pen lightly into the ink. Rub the nib off on the side of the ink bottle to catch any drips.

  2. Step 2

Make the first marks with the pen on the dump sheet or scrap paper to pull off excess ink. Alternate the strokes of the pen to make thick and thin lines.

  3. Step 3

Transfer over to the writing paper. Place the writing hand on a piece of guard paper so as not to smear any writing. Keep guard paper clear of the writing line.

  4. Step 4

Begin writing. Blot carefully any puddles of ink with a blotter. Repeat loading the pen once the ink begins to lighten.

  5. Step 5

Clean and dry the nib thoroughly after each use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although this can be messy and initially requires practice to become consistent, dip pens produce the highest quality of calligraphy writing.
