Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Hobby knife
- Rounded hobby file (only for resin or metal models)
- Dremel or jeweler's sander (only for resin or metal models)
- Plastic cement (only for plastic models)
Step1
Remove the piece from the sprue or tree. Using a hobby knife, cut as close to the piece as possible. This lessens the amount of work you have to do later.
Step2
Trim the bulk of the flashing with a hobby knife. You can use the tip to cut it off or the side of the blade to scrape it off. Get as much flashing off without scraping off any parts of the model.
Step3
File the area smooth. For resin pieces, you can use a rounded hobby file to smooth out the areas left over from the hobby knife. You can also use a Dremel or jeweler's sander, with enough practice. Take care with these powered sanders, since it's easy to remove too much material and spoil the look of the model. Files don't work well on plastic figures and often leave a rough finish.
Step4
Use plastic cement to smooth hard to reach areas. Plastic cement works by melting the area you apply it to, so you can use it in small amounts to get to smooth the areas of flashing that a knife can't reach. Use this sparingly, as it can also melt fine details of the model.
