The history of the group of cards games played alone dates to the mid-1800s. In the United Kingdom Solitaire is called "Patience" and in France it is referred to as "Reussite" or "Success." In Norwegian and Dutch the name translates to "Kabal" or "Kaballah," which is a reference to the thinking at one time that the outcome of a card game had to do with fortune telling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the jokers from a standard deck of 52 cards. Shuffle the cards well.

  2. Step 2

Deal four cards left to right face up in a row on the table. Prepare to make four foundation piles immediately above the row of four face up cards.

  3. Step 3

Create foundation piles beginning with the Ace and then adding additional cards in ascending order. Disregard suits. Add cards to the foundation piles strictly based on value, Ace through King.

  4. Step 4

Take any aces showing in the row of four and move them to the foundation piles. Deal out another four cards to the auxiliary piles. Play any possible cards up to the foundation piles and then play any additional cards that become exposed.

  5. Step 5

Deal four cards from the stock pile each time. Deal four across the auxiliary piles, then check for play cards and send them to the foundations. Do this until the stock pile runs out.

  6. Step 6

Gather up the four waste piles right to left, putting the first on top of the second, then on top of the third and so forth. Turn the cards face down and begin again dealing out four cards and four more across the row, always playing cards to the foundation piles after four cards are dealt.

  7. Step 7

Collect the waste piles and run through them again two times. Shuffle and redeal to start a new game after exhausting the stock piles three times.
