Richard Canfield, a famous gambler and casino owner in the late 1800s, created Canfield Solitaire. Canfield allowed guests to "buy" a deck of cards for $50 and then agreed to pay them $5 for every card played to the foundation stacks. The game made him a very rich man. In Double Canfield, two games are set up and players race to place more foundation cards than the other.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shuffle a standard deck of 52 cards. Deal out 13 cards face down into a neat stack to create the Demon Pile. Turn up the top card and set the stack to the side.

  2. Step 2

Turn over the first card from the reserve pile (the remaining 39 cards) to determine the starting foundation card in all four suits. Flip another card and set it immediately below the first. Add three cards to create a four of four tableau cards. Set the remaining stock cards aside.

  3. Step 3

Remove any foundation cards that are the same value and set it next to the existing foundation card. Build on the foundation cards in ascending order as play begins. Move all four foundation cards to the top during game play.

  4. Step 4

Pull a group of three cards from the top of the stock pile and set them in a stack face up on the table. The top card plays to the tableau alternating red and black in descending order. Play the top card, then the card below it and so forth as the opportunity presents. Turn over three more cards.

  5. Step 5

Play cards from the Demon Pile as the opportunity arises on the tableau cards. Continue playing through the stock pile, three at a time, until the pile is exhausted. Turn over the cards and play through the stock pile as many times as possible while using cards from the Demon Pile as well.

  6. Step 6

Build on the tableau cards in descending order. Pull from the tableau piles and move cards to the foundation stacks in ascending order.

  7. Step 7

Set up a second game of Canfield opposite the first. Race with the second player to see who can complete the foundation piles first or who can move the most cards to the foundations.
