Step 1
Read through the rule book to learn and understand the basic moves, characters, terrain options and outcomes that are offered. This will help you understand something when a question or issue comes up during play. You will also learn of the different ways to win based on the scenario you are playing. This includes being the first to reach a certain spot in the terrain, finding a certain artifact, staying in the game to a certain round or rescuing a certain figure, among others.

Step 2
Create a strategy that will work with the characters and terrain you have established. This will require knowing the moves for the characters you have and a little luck with the combat dice. You will need to be both offensive and defensive in order to create the best situation for yourself.

Step 3
Play out the scenario you have chosen. Once you complete your objective or series of objectives, you win. If your opponent completes their objectives first, then they win. This is the standard way of playing and winning Heroscape according to the rule book. The different scenario's offered can make the game more and more interesting every time you play.

Step 4
Choose your battlefield, army and play out your game by pitting opponents against each in a man-to-man style combat. This is not according to the rule book, but is the fastest way to play. One example of this is when a player takes a turn, he will roll the combat dice and try to get as many skulls as possible (within the numbers of rolls allowed by the characters card), then the opponent will (with the same basis) try to get as many shields as he can to ward off the attack.
