Young or old, when you listen to the radio, you may have no idea about what type of music you're listening to. Because musical trends change so often, you feel like you have to do a lot of research in order to survive the current music scene.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Learn from friends. Everyone has at least one friend who's really into music. She may go to the hottest shows or play the best songs in her car. Ask her to send you some of the songs from her playlist to get you started.
Step2
Listen to as many genres of music as possible. If you want to survive the current scene, you should have a broad knowledge of music. Buy some downloads of artists from the punk, emo, rock, indie and pop genres of music.
Step3
Browse MySpace Music to stay on top of music trends. On this page, the youth geared website features new groundbreaking artists you can listen to or add to your MySpace profile. You can also browse other members' profiles to find the most popular types of music.
Step4
Attend a few concerts. If you have never attended a concert or haven't in a long time, you should consider going in order to survive the current music scene. You'll learn what's hot and what's not at the shows.

Tips & Warnings

  • Music scenes often change very rapidly. You may think indie rock's the best type of music, but you could find it out of style very shortly.
  • You may get hassled at first when trying to navigate the current scene. For example, you may accidentally wear the wrong thing to a concert (for example, bright happy colors to an emo band's show).
