As a refugee, your formal application to seek asylum in a new country has been approved and you're ready to start your new life in a new land. At this stage in the process, much of the hard part is over; however, it's always a challenge to survive as a refugee in a new country. Adjusting to the relocation process may present a little bit of a challenge for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Get educated on the laws. You'll want to ensure that you stay on the right side of the law in your new country of residence, particularly the laws specific to people with refugee status.
Step2
Contact organizations, government departments and agencies dedicated to refugee resettlement. They offer specialized housing and resources to help refugees survive the overwhelming process of getting established in a new country.
Step3
Know the terms of your resettlement. It's important to know these terms in order to maintain your refugee status. For example, your resettlement terms may require that you stay in the initial country location where you've been assigned for a certain time period, or that you don't return to your home country for a period of time.
Step4
Learn the language(s) of your new country. Many countries offer special classes that are free for refugees. Check out your local Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) assessment center to determine your level of language competence and get registered in the appropriate class.
Step5
Establish your identification. Apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) in the United States, or Social Insurance Number (SIN) in Canada.
Step6
Familiarize yourself with your new country's customs to survive the adjustment period. These include things such as standard greetings, courtesies, nonverbal communication/body language and tipping.
